Partridge berries and then the partridge berry jam. We look forward to what we call,” partridge berry season” and walking the barrens picking one of our favorite berries. You go to your spot and hope that nobody had beat you there. Thankfully, there are many best spots about a 30 minute drive from our house.
Partridge Berries are tart, although some people like the tart taste, most of us prefer to add a sweetener such as sugar. when baking or making jams. My sister-in-law baked pies for a church social and forgot to add sugar. You should have seen the faces of some of the people who took a bite. One man said my, “mouth went to the side of my face when I took a bite.
A few years ago, my wife’s brother-In-law and my fish’n buddy dropped by with some berries and they were big. You would have thought he had caught the prize fish as he told us about the patch that he had found.
His comments! “Oh boy, you wouldn’t believe the spot we found. It was partridge berry heaven, You could scoop them up in hand fulls and they were so red. What a spot! You should have been there, you gotta come over.”
All I know it’s west of Springdale.
I’ve picked berries with friends from Lower Island Cove. Great grounds in that area. If I can’t pick them, my buddy Bruce usually has a relative get a couple of gallons for us.There are some good barrens on the Trans Canada, near Butterpot Park and the Witless Bay Line.

Partridge Berry Jam
I like to have fresh jam and cream. I usually boil up about 2 cups of partridge berries with enough sugar to take the tartness away.Sometimes I add a squeeze of lemon and mash everything together as it’s boiling. Delicious, hot with cream or ice cream. Years ago we used to mix with carnation milk and slobber on fresh home made bread. A feast fit for a Newfoundlander.
Partridge Berry Yogurt
Personally, I like to add partridge berries to vanilla yogurt. I normally take a few frozen berried and mix them in so that the yogurt disguises the tart taste. Other times, I’ll take a dab of jam and mix in.
The following photos were taken in Lower Island Cove on Sept 26,15. A friend and I picked three gallons in a couple of hours.
My wife and I were visiting friends, at their cabin, in Lower Island Cove. He likes to “do up” his berries, into a jam, as soon as possible. His recipe is as follows. Personally, I found the jam a little too tart or sharp. Apparently, he does it this way because it’s better for diabetics. For me it’s an acquired taste or you need a dab of cream with the jam.
Gallon of partridge berries. He blends or purees them in the blender before boiling.Three or four apples peeled and blended. Dave mixes the above together and brings to a boil. Then he added three packages of strawberry jello to the low boiled blend. Bottled in presterilized mason jars.
Buying Partridge Berries
I had arranged, before hand, to buy four gallons from somebody in Blackhead. I called them, when we got in Broad Cove but there is no cell phone coverage in that area. I called, from a land phone, after we had picked our berries and changed the order to two gallons. Picked them up on the way back to Con Bay South. They had sold 29 gallons that day and had only a couple of gallons left. The price was good at $10.00 per bag, Roughly a gallon.
We should have enough for jams, pies and cheese cakes until next season. Partridge berries freeze well. You don’t have to place them on trays and freeze, before packaging, like blueberries.
Apr 14,2017: Made 6 bottles of jam today. We enjoy jam and toast for breakfast.
